A Well-Built Deck Deserves Proper Care
A professionally built deck is a serious investment—and one that can significantly boost your home’s value, curb appeal, and overall livability. But like anything exposed to the elements, a deck needs ongoing care to look and perform its best.
In British Columbia, our diverse climate creates unique challenges for outdoor living spaces. Whether it’s heavy winter rains in the Lower Mainland or hot, dry summers in the Okanagan, the environment can take a toll on even the best-built structures.
At All Hands On Deck, we not only build custom decks—we help homeowners across BC maintain them year after year. If you want your deck to stay strong, safe, and beautiful, here’s what you need to know about extending its lifespan.
Understand Your Deck’s Material
Not all decks require the same level of upkeep. The type of material you’ve chosen will directly impact your maintenance routine. Natural wood decks, especially pressure-treated lumber or cedar, need more attention than composite decking.
Wood is porous, which means it can absorb water, expand and contract with temperature changes, and become vulnerable to mold, rot, and insect damage over time. Composite decking, on the other hand, is engineered to resist moisture and fading, but it still needs basic care to avoid buildup and wear.
Knowing what your deck is made of—and what that material requires—is the first step in protecting it for the long haul.
Keep It Clean, Season After Season
Regular cleaning is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your deck. Leaves, pollen, dirt, and standing water can all damage your deck’s surface if left for too long. Over time, that debris can cause staining, promote mold growth, and accelerate deterioration—especially in wood.
Plan to sweep your deck regularly, especially during fall and spring. At least once or twice a year, give the entire surface a more thorough wash using mild soap and water or a deck-specific cleaner. For wood decks, this is a great opportunity to inspect for discoloration or early signs of mold. For composite, it helps prevent dirt and debris from getting embedded in the surface texture.
Pressure washing can be effective, but it must be done carefully—too much pressure can damage the wood or the finish. If in doubt, consult with a pro.
Manage Moisture the Smart Way
BC’s wet winters and damp shoulder seasons make moisture management a key part of deck maintenance. Even if your deck was built with rot-resistant materials, it’s still important to keep it dry and well-ventilated.
Check that your deck has proper drainage and isn’t holding standing water anywhere. Remove leaves and organic debris that can trap moisture against boards. If your deck is close to the ground or in a shaded area, consider adding ventilation or airflow beneath it to prevent long-term dampness.
Sealing wood decks regularly with a water-repellent finish can dramatically reduce water absorption and slow down the aging process.
Re-Stain and Seal as Needed
Wood decks need protection from both moisture and sun exposure. UV rays can dry out the wood, cause fading, and make it more brittle over time. That’s why applying stain or sealant is one of the most important long-term maintenance steps for wood decks.
As a general rule, most wood decks should be resealed every 1–3 years, depending on the product used, how much sun the deck gets, and the level of foot traffic. Transparent or semi-transparent stains allow you to maintain a natural look while still offering protection. Solid stains provide a more opaque finish and stronger UV defense.
Before reapplying stain or sealer, the deck should be fully cleaned and allowed to dry for at least 48 hours. If you’re not sure whether your deck needs it yet, try the “water test”—sprinkle some water on the boards. If it beads up, your sealant is still doing its job. If it soaks in, it’s time to reseal.
Inspect for Small Issues Before They Become Big Problems
One of the most important aspects of deck maintenance is knowing what to look for. Take time to inspect your deck at least once a season—ideally in spring and fall. Look for loose fasteners, protruding nails or screws, cracked boards, soft spots, or wobbly railings. These may seem like minor issues, but they can compromise the safety and structural integrity of the deck if left untreated.
Early detection allows for simple repairs instead of costly replacements. If you spot signs of rot or damage, it’s worth calling in a professional to assess the scope and recommend a fix.
All Hands On Deck offers repair and maintenance support for decks we’ve built—and even those we haven’t. Our goal is to keep every deck safe, sturdy, and functional for as long as possible.
Clear Snow and Ice the Right Way
In BC’s interior regions, snow and ice can create winter hazards on your deck. But clearing them the wrong way can do more harm than good. Avoid using metal shovels, which can gouge the deck surface or scratch protective coatings. Instead, use a plastic shovel or a push broom to gently remove snow.
Never use rock salt or harsh chemical de-icers on your deck. These products can damage both wood and composite decking, as well as corrode metal fasteners and railings. If traction is a concern, choose a deck-safe alternative or simply shovel and sand the area to prevent slips.
Don’t Overlook the Underside
The part of your deck you don’t see every day can still impact how well it holds up. Moisture buildup, mold, and insects can accumulate in hidden areas, especially in lower decks or those built close to the ground.
If you’re comfortable doing so, take a look underneath the deck annually. Look for signs of moisture, rot, or animals nesting near the supports. A little proactive attention here can prevent major structural issues in the future.
Professional Maintenance Can Extend Lifespan
Many homeowners are comfortable with routine cleaning and basic upkeep. But scheduling professional maintenance every few years can extend the life of your deck significantly. A professional eye can spot things you might miss, like early-stage rot, shifting footings, or improperly installed hardware.
At All Hands On Deck, we provide deck inspections, repairs, and refinishing to help protect the investment you’ve made. Whether we built your deck or not, we’re happy to step in and help you keep it in great condition—season after season.
